The beauty of Birth Photography

As a photographer I get ask "What's your favorite thing to photograph?" all the time!  And the answer for me is easy!  Births.  I think it kind of shocks people when I don't say weddings.... which is definitely my second favorite thing to photography!  The reason they are my top two is because of the real genuine emotion that is involved in some of the greatest days you'll probably ever have in your life!
Now I'll tell you I also get quite a few crazy looks (mostly from men!) when I say birth photography.  I think so many people think there is nothing photo worthy at a birth...but it's quite the opposite!  This is truly a once in a lifetime event...even if you have more then one child!  The emotions are so real, the precious first moments with your new baby are so amazing!  And they can be so quickly for gotten...and as a mom, I know you miss so much of what's going on!   I can honestly say that in every birth I have photographed the Mom and even sometimes the Dad has said to me after seeing the photos... "I didn't even remember that happening!"  Like them getting their first weight check, their foot stamps, the first time they look at you, or the look on brother's, sister's, Grammy or Grampies face when they first meet the new baby.   These are things that need to be captured and remembered forever!!
I think one of the big things that make people hesitate when it come to birth photo's, they are afraid that the photos could be gross.   I manly shoot in black and white which takes away any of that, but still tells the story beautifully.  I only take photos of what your comfortable with,  if there are things you want/ don't want photographed...it's totally up to you!
Because of the nature of labors I can only take on two or three a month.  And obviously I can't guarantee that I'll make it either.  I had my dear friend and photographer lined up to come photograph my daughters birth...but I was in labor a total of an hour and a half and at the hospital a total of 20 min before she was born!! So needless to say she didn't make it before my daughter.  Thankfully I had a friend who I could hand my camera at and she got some great ones!

So if you are expecting a little bundle of joy... consider hiring a professional photography to document your once in a lifetime moments!

He was telling his mom she "did a good job!"  So sweet!

  1. I would have LOVED to have birth photography. A friend of mine was willing to do it with the second one, but I knew as soon as I went into labor that there wouldn't be time to call and wake her up and for her to get there in time. I think births are VERY photo (and video) worthy! Beautiful pics!
